How to update Kaspersky Antivirus manually

There are a lot of reasons if you want to perform a manuall update to Kaspersky Antivirus. I am sure that it is very useful for everyone as I said in my previous article where you can learn "how to install Kaspersky Antivirus". For example if you moved and you don't have an Internet connection available you can go at a friend and copy the antivirus databases. Perhaps one of your friends needs to update their antivirus and you could be the one who will help. But there are a lot of other reasons so if you need to find out how to update Kaspersky Antivirus manually this article is everything you need to know. First of all, I would recommend you to use the same antivirus version on both computers, the one that has an Internet connection and the other one that doesn't. You can download Kaspersky Antivirus from this website as we regularly check for new versions and we should have the latest version available. Let's get started, I will need you to open Kaspersky Antivirus just like I did in the following picture and make sure to look up in the right corner and click on "Settings" :

The main interface for Kaspersky Antivirus

As you can see I created a new folder on my desktop and I renamed this folder "Kaspersky Antivirus Database". This is the folder to where the antivirus database will be saved.

I have create a folder on my desktop called - Kaspersky Antivirus Database. This is the folder to where I intend to save the the antivirus signatures

You will see the "Settings" window which is actually the control panel for this antivirus. From here click on "My Update Center" ( at the older versions it was called "Update Center" if I remember well ). Now you need to make sure that the second box from "Additional" is checked and you need to specify an empty folder located on your computer. This is why I created a new folder and I renamed it "Kaspersky Antivirus Database". I will specify this folder.

Kaspersky Antivirus Settings

Click on "Browse" button and from there navigate to the folder to where you want to save the antivirus database, in this case my folder is called "Kaspersky Antivirus Database". Select this folder and make sure to click on "OK" button.

Choose a folder to save the antivirus database

Click on "Apply" button and again on "OK" button in order to save these settings.

Click on "Apply" and "OK" buttons in order to save those settings

Now you need to go back to the antivirus interface and choose the third tab called "My Update Center". From there you need to click on "Start Update" and wait for the antivirus to update the antivirus database.

This is how you Start the update manually in Kaspersky Antivirus

As you can see the antivirus is updating his databases. You may ask yourself: Why is updating the databases if it's already up to date ? Good question. When we chosed to save the databases to that folder and we enabled that option, for security reasons the antivirus needs to re-download the entire database from a secure location but this shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes. So please wait to finish the update.

Update in progress

You finished the job on your computer, all you have to do is to copy the folder that we created for saving the antivirus database and also the same setup file that you used when you installed the antivirus on your computer. As you can see in the next picture, I will copy the folder "Kaspersky Antivirus Database" and the antivirus setup file on my external USB HDD ( hard drive ) or on my USB stick. You can also write those files on a CD or a DVD. It doesn't matter on what you are going to copy and transport these files if you will be able to copy them on the computer that needs the manually update.

You need to copy the setup file for the antivirus and also the folder to where you choosed to save the antivirus updates in our case "Kaspersky Antivirus Database"

Supposing that you arrived at the computer that needs to update Kaspersky Antivirus database manually. Install the same antivirus version like the one from your computer ( it should work with other versions to but I will not guarantee you this ), ignore any update warning and go to "Settings" and from there go to "My Update Center". Look on the right side and you should see the first option called "Run Mode" - Start update: Automatically. You need to click on "Settings..." button.

You are in Settings - option - My Update Center. You need to access the first option named "Run mode" and to change from the automatically update to manually. To do so click on the "Settings..." button

If you clicked on the "Settings..." button, a small window should appear and there are two tabs, the first one called "Source" and the second one called "Run mode". Choose the first tab called "Source" and you may notice that it is a small box called "Kaspersky Lab's update servers". What you need to do is to click on the "+ Add" link ( look down it's near Edit, Delete, Move up, Move down ).

You are located in "Update Settings" window and you need to choose the first tab called "Source". Then you need to select "+ Add"

If you clicked the "+ Add" link you should see another small window that will allow you to navigate on your computer. Make sure to choose the folder the same folder where you saved the antivirus database, in our case it will be the "Kaspersky Antivirus Database" folder. Choose the folder and click on "OK" button.

Select update source - locate the folder that contains the antivirus updates

Now in our window right under "Kaspersky Lab's update servers" you should see a second checked box that shows the path on your computer to the specified folder. Click on "OK" button and the window will close.

The folder that contains the antivirus database appeared in this window and it's located under "Kaspersky Lab's update servers"

Now, as you may noticed the status from the "Run mode" has changed to "Manually" which is what we wanted. Make sure to click on "Apply" and then on "OK" buttons.

As you can see the settings are now changed to "Manually" - Choose "Apply" and then "OK"

The final step, if you will return to the antivirus interface, go to "My Update Center" and press on "Start Update", just like you would have an Internet connection. And here it is, the antivirus will start to update his databases like he would have an Internet connection but he actually updates his database from the folder that you have specified.

Now you know how to manually update Kaspersky AntiVirus signature database when there is now Internet Connection around. When I tried this for the first time it seemed to me a little difficult but after I managed to update the antivirus a couple of times for some friends I said "Well, it's not so hard..." and it isn't. It is not something complicated and if you read this entire article it should help you a lot. The secret is to be careful with all the steps and the manuall update will become a piece of cake.
