Designed for both beginners and advanced users and coming as an free, open source application it should be your choice if you're looking for the best password manager. First of all, make sure that you have the latest version of KeePass, you can download KeePass from here. You can obtain from us the "Classic Edition" which doesn't need anything else to run on Windows like Microsoft .NET Framework which is being required by "Professional Edition". Supposing that you downloaded KeePass installer for Windows, please open it so that we can start our installation. You should see a similar window like the one from this picture which says :"Welcome to the KeePass Password Safe Setup Wizard". Choose the "Next" button to continue.

Now you should see another window from KeePass Setup called "license Agreement", make sure to read the entire license and choose "I Accept the Agreement" and then press "Next" button.

You need to select the place to where KeePass will be installed. Remember that the default location is in "C:\Program Files\KeePass Password Safe". If you want to select another folder for the installation, click on the "Browse" button.

Select where to install - this is the default folder

You can now select "Start Menu Folder". As you can see I chosed "Don't create a Start Menu Folder" but you can leave it as it is if you want KeePass to appear on your start menu. To continue, press on the "Next" button.

Select program shortcuts

Since I chosed "Don't create a Start Menu Folder" at the previous step, here in this window I will choose from additional icons to "Create a desktop icon" and I will also choose "Associate KeePass with the .kdb file extension" option. Again, to continue press on the "Next" button.

Additional tasks

You should be ready to install KeePass on your Windows. If you need to change something click on the "Back" button and you will be allowed to change anything from previous steps. If you are ready, press on the "Install" button and the installation will start ( it should be really fast as this program is very small )

Ready to install

If the program has been installed on your computer, you should see this window which tells us that the program installation is now complete. As you can see I chosed both options : "Launch KeePass" and "Visit plugins webpage" so that you can see a lot of plugins available for this application. Press "Finish" button and the KeePass will start for the first time.

Completing the installation

When the program is being started for the first time, it will ask you for a "Master Password" ( type a password ) which will allow you to access KeePass and then you will be able to obtain access to all other passwords stored with this application. You can see this picture, just make sure that this is a password that you will never forget and that no one knows it.

A new window called "Add Entry" will appear and it will ask you to specify the group, title, username, password, url or other notes. Let's say that I have a favourite website from where I order my books. Generate a password or enter one ( other than "Master Password" ) and make sure to enter any other details that you may need and press on the "OK" button.

Add entry - create a new password entry

As you can see, I have added a username and a password to the "Internet" category with one of my favourite accounts. A simple mouse click will allow you to delete, view, edit or modify the account.
