This antivirus is being used by more than 200 million users worldwide. What are the system requirements for running Kaspersky Antivirus ?

It really depends on what computer type ( desktop / notebook ) you are using. I can give you some examples regarding the system usage like CPU and RAM memory. I installed Kaspersky Antivirus on a desktop that has an AMD CPU at 1700 Mhz with 2 GB of DDRAM and a 40 GB HDD. This is an older desktop model and I am using it since 2003. The other one is a notebook that has an Intel CPU - Core Duo at 2000 Mhz with 2 GB of DDRAM and a 160 GB HDD. I was able to run Kaspersky Antivirus without affecting my computer performance. When it was running in my taskbar I've noticed that he uses from 4 up to 8 MB of DDRAM memory and for a full computer scan the DDRAM usage increased up to 30-50 MB. Also the CPU usage has increased but this is normal even for other antiviruses and applications. I currently use the Kaspersky Antivirus on notebook running an Intel CPU - Core 2 Duo at 2500 Mhz with 4 GB of DDRAM and a 320 HDD and this antivirus works like any other program from my computer. So the answer would be this: if you have a computer that can deliver more CPU and RAM performance, the better. If you use an older computer you can run this antivirus without slowing your computer very much, you just have to test it before evaluating this program.

You can purchase one license / 1 computer for 1 or 2 years. The price for 1 computer and 1 year is $39.95, for 2 years and 1 computer license the price would be $64.00. Do I need a firewall besides of this antivirus ?

If you are using the Internet you need to have an active firewall on your computer. If you already have a good firewall program we encourage you to use it in combination with Kaspersky Antivirus. If you don't have an firewall you can choose Kaspersky Internet Security instead of Kaspersky Antivirus. If you don't have or don't want to use an additional firewall, you can use my method. I use Kaspersky Antivirus + Windows XP SP 2 firewall ( I would recommend you to upgrade from Microsoft Windows XP SP 2 to SP 3 ) to make sure that the Windows firewall is ON, just go to :
START - Settings - Control Panel - Security Center and make sure that the FIREWALL is ON ( if it's OFF make sure to switch it back to ON )
This firewall will offer you a basic level of protection, it works great on my case but keep in mind that I am using 2 routers configured to block outside connections. If you do have a direct connection to the Internet, you should use another firewall or Kaspersky Internet Security that comes with an integrated firewall.

 

Do I need to use additional programs, like an anti-malware program ?

Although Kaspersky Antivirus detects most of the dangerous malware I would recommend you to use an additional program like AdAware or SpyBot Search & Destroy ( SpyBot - S & D ). Those are free anti-spyware, anti-malware applications that are specialized on malware and spyware detections. Also I've tested them in combination with Kaspersky Antivirus and they are working great. Just don't run them in the same, run once at a time.

 

Differences between Kaspersky Antivirus & Kaspersky Internet Security ?

Kaspersky Antivirus provides you with basic antivirus protection, it has the same functions that Kaspersky Internet Security has but it doesn't come with an firewall and a lot of features. So, Kaspersky Antivirus DOESN'T have the following features : two-way personal firewall; secure Wi-Fi and VPN connections, application rules configured automatically, security rating assigned to unknown applications, access to user’s resources and data is restricted for unknown applications, virtual keyboard for safe entry of logins and passwords, prevents theft of data exchanged via secure connections (HTTPS / SSL), parental control and improved antispam protection. If you consider these features too complicated or not useful for your computer then, Kaspersky Antivirus is the perfect solution for you and your computer.

 

How can I choose the best antivirus protection for me ?

Best antivirus protection is given by the antivirus capabilites like the detection rates and the antivirus updates. It is well known that besides other technologies, the database signature with viruses must be updated. For best protection I would recommend you to setup your Kaspersky Antivirus on the "Automatically mode".

 

What settings are you using for Kaspersky Antivirus ?

Download Kaspersky Antivirus, install it, update it and then run a full scan. The update mode is set to automatically mode and this is how most of the people are using it. This is what I did for the first time when I use it. It works as I said for many users but if you want to know how I configured my antivirus settings for version 7.0 and 8.0 here they are :
- Open Kaspersky Anti-Virus and you will see at the bottom of the Kaspersky window an option called Settings ( near Help for versions 7.0 ) and the same option for versions 8.0 you can see it up in the right corner.
- If you access Kaspersky Anti-Virus Settings a new window will be opening with a lot of other options ( it looks like an control panel ).
- Under Protection ( first option ) you have File Anti-Virus, Mail Anti-Virus, Web Anti-Virus and Proactive Defense.
- Make sure that Enable File Anti-Virus is checked and the Security level is set to Recommended.
- At the Action option ( right under Security level ) make sure that Prompt for Action is checked/enabled. Mail Anti-Virus and Web Anti-Virus should have the Security level on Recommended but make sure that under the level Action - Block access is being checked/enabled ( including Disinfect, Delete if disinfection fails ) and Connectivity option ( under the Action ) has the same checked/enabled functions - Scan POP3/SMTP/IMAP traffic / Enable Microsoft Office Outlook and the Bat! support.
- At the last option from Protection level make sure that Enable Proactive Defense is checked/enabled including Enable Application Activity Analyzer. Leave the other two - Application Integrity Control and Registry Guard unchecked. Next, use the same settings that we did at the Protection level for the Scan level - ( for example, leave the Security level to Recommended and make sure that Do not prompt for action - Disinfect, Delete if disinfection fails is being checked/enabled ). Inside the Scan option - at the Threats and exclusions - Malware categories - check/enable - Viruses, worms, Trojans, hack tools - the same for spyware, adware, dialers and Potentially dangerous software ( riskware ).
- Right under Threats and exclusions you have the Update option - make sure that this one is being setup at the Run Mode to - Automatically.
- For a little extra protection I recommend to password protect your antivirus. You can do it at the Service option, make sure that you check/enable the - Enable password protection - use the Settings button and type your password. After all of these settings, use the Apply button, it will ask you for your entered password and the settings will be updated.
This is my Kaspersky Antivirus configuration it is working great for me but it may not satisfy you, in time you can create or discover your own settings.

 

How many system resources will this antivirus use ?

If you have a powerful computer ( at least 3-4 years old ) this antivirus should work fine with most PCs. Keep in mind that all antiviruses use CPU and RAM memory so the more, the better.

 

Can I test Kaspersky Antivirus before considering a purchase ?

After you download Kaspersky Antivirus and finish installation you have to apply for a 30 days trial mode. The antivirus works in trial mode for 30 days and when this period ends you will have to purchase a license for your computer or choose to uninstall it. Please note that is working as a full version of in trial mode.

 

A new antivirus version is being released after I purchased this program ?

If you purchased for example Kaspersky Antivirus 7.0 and after some time a new version was released like version 8.0 ( alias Kaspersky Antivirus 2009 ) don't worry, you can always upgrade to the latest version, just download the latest version and install it, it will require you to enter your serial number or activation key from the date that you purchased the antivirus. Just use your current license for future versions and it should work for all of them.

 

Updating Kaspersky Antivirus issues.

If you cannot update your antivirus, please check your Internet connection. If it's working then make sure that no other installed firewalls or Windows firewalls are blocking Kaspersky Antivirus updates. You need to check their blocked programs/applications and make sure that Kaspersky Antivirus is allowed to access the Internet. If still doesn't work make sure to check once again the Kaspersky Antivirus Update Settings. Another reaseon could be a blocked server, when millions of people are updating their antiviruses in the same time, one of the servers could be blocked by to many requests. If that's the case in a couple of minutes or hours it should work again.
