What is FileZilla

 

FileZilla Client known as FileZilla is the best, free, open source FTP client. Launched on February, 2001 it was initially made for Windows. Starting with version 3.x, this FTP client started to support Linux and Mac OS X. It supports all protocols such as FTP, SFTP and FTPS ( SFTP means the FTP protocol over SSH port 22 and FTPS means FTP over SSL/TLS ). It is the world most popular free FTP client and one of the most downloaded software from SourceForge.net ( the entire source code for this program is being hosted on SourceForge.net ). Being written in C++ it is really fast, has a lot of features and it can be installed on all major languages.

A lot of years ago if you would ask me about an FTP client I would probably recommended SmartFTP or CuteFTP which both of them are shareware. To be honest I started to use FileZilla for the first time in 2008 and I always said that this should be listed on this website as it is an excellent free FTP client ( probably the most popular one ) that has almost all features that other shareware clients have. However, since I always forgot or done something else, here it is, listed on this website. The interface is clean and simple and extremely intuitive. When you install the program and open it for the first time you can notice those 4 blank fields that requires the name of the host, the username, the password and optional the port, I said optional because if you do not specify a port to connect to it will use by default the FTP port 21. And this everything you need to do in order to connect to your FTP account. It has all the great features available, for example you can use the "Site Manager" ( for a shortcut press CTRL+S ) that allows you to create a list with FTP sites that includes users, passwords, port number etc. You can use the "File and folder view" feature which allows you to navigate folders and view their content and also you can drag and drop all kind of files between your FTP host and your PC. There are a lot of other features but I am not going to mention all of them here, you can discover them by installing and using this program.

If you want a specific feature at this program, keep in mind that not all of them are being activated by default or some of them are already activated and you may be interested in disabling some of them. For example, the update feature is, by default when you install FileZilla, activated which enables the automatic update check, to look for a new version of FileZilla once a week ( 7 days ). If it finds a newer version, a small window will warn you and will ask you if you want to update your current version to the latest one. Also, by default the program will not save a log file on your computer so you will have to access the "Settings" window and make the necessary changes: specify a place where to save the log file.

How do I enable/disable the Automatic update check from FileZilla ?

Open FileZilla, from the program interface click on the second tab called "Edit" and from there choose "Settings". A new window will appear: look on the right side and navigate ( scroll down that window ) down until you see "Update Check". Click on "Update Check" and from there if you want to enable the automatic update make sure to check that small box called "Enable automatic update check" and specify a number for days. If you want to disable the automatic update check make sure to uncheck that little box called "Enable automatic update check".

 

How do I save a log file when I use FileZilla ?

Again, start FileZilla, from the program interface click on the second tab called "Edit" and from there choose "Settings". A new window will appear: look on the right side and navigate ( scroll down that window ) down until you see "Logging". Click on "Logging" and make sure to check both boxes: the first one "Show timestamps in message log" and the second one "Log to file". Then click on "Browse" and enter a name for your log file. Also you can limit the size of your logfile, the default value is 10 MB.

That's because, by default it will always ask for action. In most cases it's better to keep it this way. However, if you need to custom this action for example to automatically overwrite the file you can modify the settings. From the program interface click on the second tab called "Edit" and from there choose "Settings". A new window will appear: look on the right side and navigate ( scroll down that window ) down until you see "Transfers". From there choose the second option called "File exists action". You will need to select for both "Downloads" and "Uploads" this setting - "Overwrite if different size or source newer". As you may notice it is a small warning message that says "If using 'overwrite if newer', your system time zone has to be synchronized with the server. If the time differs ( e.g. different timezone), specify a timezone offset in the site manager.

 

How do I change the theme for this FTP client ?

If you want to change the theme, it's simple. From main interface, go to "Edit" - "Settings" and choose from the menu located on the right side ( scroll down ) the "Interface". Then click on "Themes" and from there you can choose from six different themes and those are: Classic, Blukis, Cyril, LonE, Minimal and OpenCrystal. Also you can even change the size for all icons and you can choose from 16x16 ( default size ) 32x32 or 48x48.
