What is Abbyy FineReader

 

Abbyy FineReader is an OCR ( optical character recognition ) software for text recognition that allows you to create editable electronic files from the documents that you scan. It comes with a lot of features such as the ability to recognize mobile phone and digital camera images, intelligent interface, integration with a lot of well know office applications and many others. Abbyy FineReader uses an Adaptive Document Recognition Technology (ADRT®) which actually allows this software to re-create the most complex formatting attributes, such as headers and footers, page numbering, captions to tables, diagrams and images, fonts and styles, footnotes etc. It also allows to re-create table of contents with formatting and linking and also the heading hierarchic structure. Those are only a couple of things that Abbyy FineReader will do for you. Abbyy FineReader is a superior software if you're looking for OCR Accuracy and Layout Retention, Document Structure Reconstruction and Editability, Efficiency and Productivity, Digital Camera OCR, PDF Conversion, Saving and Archiving.

If you're going to look for an OCR software you will find only a couple of big players in this area. This was true 7 years ago and it's the same thing nowadays. I am sure that things will look the same in the future. Regarding this program, I can only say that I discovered Abbyy FineReader in 2005. Before that date I used and I tried all other competitors for this program. All of them, except Abbyy FineReader. Don't ask me why I was blind, it just happened. After I discovered this program my life changed in good. Abbyy FineReader is without a doubt the best OCR ( optical character recognition ) software that I ever used. I am not going to say that Abbyy FineReader is the best in this niche but I am also going to explain why he deserves the first place. Back then, I was using a Canon scanner which allowed me to scan one page at a time and then to run that page through my OCR software which in the end was transformed in a .doc file. That was the format that I wanted. Sure, some pages were actually copies from a Xerox machine and the results were poor because those pages were not quite clean. I also used pages taken from books which were in a perfect condition. I tried several OCR programs because the results were poor. In some cases, the results were extremely poor and it tooked me a lot of time to correct all those errors. I even started to type everything by hand because I was faster and the stress was lower when compared with all that work. So, I discovered Abbyy FineReader and I was amazed by his accuracy and speed. The feeling was extraordinary because I was convinced that the solution I was using was the best and there is no way that something else could perform better. I also feel guilty now because I didn't discovered Abbyy FineReader before and counting 2-3 years...well, I lost a lot of time. What a waste of time for me and what a gain for you if you're reading this review. Look what, if you need the best OCR software, you don't have to believe me, just try a couple of OCR programs you will loose a couple of hours but not years like me ) and compare your results. What's even funny is that you can read a lot of reviews that will place this fine piece of software on the second place, on the third place. Some people claims that yeah it's good but not that good when compared with this one. I don't need to lie my visitors, I am actually telling my story and I even encourage all of you to test other programs before going with this one. Regarding my opinion, I can guarantee you that Abbyy FineReader is the best OCR software for me.

According to Abbyy developers, in order tu run Abbyy FineReader on your computer you will need a 1GHz processor or higher ( Intel or AMD processors ). For Microsoft Windows users you will need to use a Microsoft® Windows® 7, Microsoft® Windows® Vista, Microsoft® Windows® Server 2008, Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003, Microsoft® Windows® XP system. Regarding the RAM you will need at least 512MB RAM or higher. The space required on your hard drive will be 1.5 GB for the program installation. You will also need a video card and monitor ( 1024×768 or higher ) and finally the most important thing is that you will need a TWAIN- or WIA-compatible scanner, digital camera or fax-modem (optional) and there is nothing else specified such as a list with the TWAIN or WIA compatible scanners. Those are the technical specification for Abbyy FineReader version 10. Those system requirements may change when a new version will be released.
