What is AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition can be described as the most popular free antivirus worldwide. Probably the greatest feature is the free charge for this antivirus. It is free to use for the life of the product. Another great thing is the fast virus update database which also are available for the lifetime of this antivirus. Millions of users are using this antivirus and they trust this great software. AVG antivirus is free and it won't slow down a computer like other similar products and it is one of the few antivirus software that requires low system resources. So if we are going to describe this free antivirus software, we would specify three important aspects. The first one is the automatic update function which is present also at the major antivirus software developers, though, it's probably the only antivirus offering free antivirus updates for the lifetime. The second aspect would be the AVG Resident Shield, which defends your system by using real-time protection when you're opening files or running programs. The last important function would be the AVG Virus Vault, a great tool which allows you to handle in a safe way infected files on your computer.

Editor reviews for AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Searching for a powerful and free antivirus solution ? Look no more, we have found AVG AntiVirus Free Edition which is more than you could wish from an free antivirus. It has all the great functions that paid antiviruses has to offer like an engine that scans your entire system - hard drives, e-mail, running programs and a great function that acts like a shield preventing infections. When installing this application you will notice that it's using, by default, an auto-update function that will download new virus definitions daily. However, if you encounter a virus that creates serious problems for your system, AVG antivirus creates a rescue disk that will scan your computer in MS-DOS. While your system it's scanned, you won't notice slow performance of your computer since this software is designed to use low system resources. And as a final notice I wasn't impressed by his interface since it's a free product but I preffer a simple interface for navigation like this one instead of a beautiful one ( or paying a lot of money for a good antivirus ) that won't do anything to protect my system.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition additional notes

As a general advise regarding antivirus software I would recommend to use only one antivirus installed on a system. One antivirus can be combined with an powerful privacy tool like Ad-Aware 2007, SpyBot Search & Destroy etc. However if you wish to personally test more antivirus applications we recommend you to test them one by one without mixing them. We saw people that used 2-3 antivirus but this method of protection could reduce the effectivenes of one or another good antivirus and will definetely eat up your system resources. So, don't do it unless you really know what you are doing. From personal experience I saw that many times using one good antivirus solution combined with a decent firewall and a good privacy tool can bring you excellent results and keep your computer very safe. Remember another and a last tip: always install those security applications on a new fresh installed system without an internet connection, install them and after updating them - then, you can browse the Internet.

AVG Antivirus slows down my computer

When performing a full computer scan it's not possible to use the same amount of memory used when your antivirus is "protecting" your computer. However,if you're experiencing a major slowdown when you're scanning your computer with AVG Antivirus you could try to adjust the scan performance by customizing your scan settings. To do so, go to "Computer Scanner" and click on "Change Scan Settings".

How can I scan only one folder or a single file ?

You can scan a specified folder of file by opening AVG Antivirus. On the antivirus main interface look for the "Tools" tab - press it and select an action: "Scan selected folder..." or "Scan file...". Also, there is another simple method to scan a file, locate the file and do a "right-click" with your mouse and then select "Scan with AVG" and the antivirus is going to scan that file.

How can I update AVG Antivirus ?

By default, this antivirus should update itself at every 24 hours if you do have an Internet Connection available. However, if you want to update it manually, you can do so by opening the main antivirus interface, locate the "Tools" tab, open it and select "Update". If you don't have an Internet Connection or for any other reasons you want to update antivirus signatures offline, do the same go to "Tools" tab and then select "Update from directory...".

I am receiving this message "Invalid update control CTF file"

If you're receiving this message "Invalid update control CTF file" when you're updating AVG Antivirus in most cases the update control files are corrupted and you will need to delete these files. In the future update new control files should be downloaded correctly and the update should be completed without any problems. Here are some steps that could help you to solve this issue.

1. Open AVG Antivirus interface ( to do so click on the AVG Antivirus icon on your computer - it could be on your desktop or on your taskbar ).
2. Go to Tools -> Advanced Settings... menu.
3. Go to Manage option in the Update branch.
4. Now make sure to press "Delete temporary update files" button.
5. Try to update AVG once again.

If you're still having problems, please try the following :

It is likely that a malware or a virus changed your Internet Settings.

If you are able to access the Internet, incorrect DNS servers may be filled in - blocking AVG to update. This issue could be the result of an virus or a malware that was previously on your computer.

Let's try to see if we can solve this issue :

1. Navigate to Control Panel ( Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.)
2. Open "Network connections".
3. Do a right-click with your mouse on the connection you are using and choose "Properties".
4. Open Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item on the General tab.
5. Check to see if your settings like your IP address and DNS servers are according to your Internet Provider or choose to "Obtain * * DNS server address automatically" option if these are the settings that your ISP recommends.
6. To confirm the modified settings clicking on the OK button.
7. You can now close the window.

If the issue persists, you will need to contact the developer of AVG Antivirus on their website.

What is AVG Security Toolbar ?

When you have installed AVG Antivirus, you were asked about the AVG Security Toolbar - if you want to install it as an additional feature. If you install it, this has been added to your Internet Explorer and/or Mozilla Firefox browser. This tool works together with the LinkScanner component and checks search results of the supported Internet search engines (like popular ones: Yahoo!, Google, MSN). So the main role is to mark all web pages infected by zero day exploits and drive-by downloads. This "LinkScanner™" based technology works in real-time to provide comprehensive protection for your computer. However, if you're using the free version of this antivirus you won't benefit from all features so the toolbar that comes with the free antivirus version will only provide you with a rating for each link returned on your search results.

Installation fails on starting avgtdi?.sys service

If you're trying to install AVG and you're seeing the following error message :

Local Machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgtdi(a|x).sys: starting service....
Error 0x80070014

The problem is another security program on your computer that blocks AVG from installing its network components (like LinkScanner,E-mail Scanner or AVG WebShield ). There are some security programs known to cause this issue :

1. Lavasoft AdAware (Anniversary Edition)
2. eAcceleration StopSign Firewall

It is not necessary to choose between AVG Antivirus and other security software, all you need to do is to disable or uninstall them temporary to allow AVG installation.

Can I run another antivirus besides AVG on my computer ?

No, and it is well known that installing and running more than one antivirus product on one computer could cause conflicts and could block your computer. It is not recommended to have more than one antivirus at a time.

Where can I download AVG Antivirus Free ?

You can always obtain the latest version of AVG Antivirus Free from this page. We constantly monitor AVG and we are updating this page as soon as a new version is available. We also keep old versions of AVG Antivirus, however, we no longer list old versions for all antiviruses due to security reasons. It is not wise to use an old version for an antivirus since viruses evolve and they are becoming more dangerous, being able to disable some antiviruses, especially old ones.
