7-Zip is an open source software that can pack and unpack 7z, ZIP, BZIP2, GZIP, and TAR and can unpack only RAR, RPM, UDF, WIM ARJ, CAB, CHM HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, CPIO, DEB, DMG, WIM, XAR and Z. There are 74 languages in GUI and FAR manager and Windows shell are also available. The best use of the program goes with 7z format when overall compression can increase with 17% more than ZIP compression. The 7-z file Manager can run on 2 panels and 7-Zip Parser can detect files in NFTS partition. You can associate 7-zip with 001, 7z, ARJ, BZ2, BZIP2, CAB, CPIO, DEB, DMG, FAT, GZ, GZIP, HFS, ISO, IHA, IZMA, NTFS, RAR, RPM, SWM, TAR, TAZ, TBZ, TBZ2, TGZ, TPZ, VHD, WIM, XAR, XZ, Z, ZIP and you can test archive for its integrity.

The first input that comes to my mind is the fact that this program with highly compression ratio is free and is so small in RAM memory that I had to carefully look for it in Task Manager Display. Not even 2 mega in normal state, which is very important if you have, obliged by the context, to use an old computer. The language used in the GUI can be easily changed and there are so many possibilities at this chapter. The 7z platform is quite an opponent to the paid programs and, at this version, some bugs which were present when you had to extract an exe file were fixed and some speed optimization was done.
In addition to the previous formats, 7-Zip can now extract resources like icons from EXE files and graphic assets from SWF/FLA...
An advanced user might complain about the fact that some commands are missing, but the beginner is highly probable to find this soft very convenient, especially because of the simple GUI. If you want a self-extracted archive you have to add some plugins from the 7z site and if you want to protect your archives you have the password option. There is full functionality with Windows Explorer and GZ and TAT archives used on Linux and Unix can be created by it. In conclusion, if you're going to ask me I would say that 7-Zip is one of the best file archivers with a high compression ratio coming from the world of open source. Pretty cool, so don't forget to add this software on your must-have list.
